NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF CONFARTIGIANATO CERAMICA APPOINTED

ROME – A leading figure in Salento's artisanal tradition leads the "ceramics" category of Confartigianato Imprese. Antonio Colì, a 43-year-old from Cutrofiano and director of the renowned family business "Fratelli Colì," has been elected national president of the ceramists' association. The Salento ceramist, elected at the most recent assembly held in Rome, will serve for the next four years. He will be joined by Davide Servadei (Emilia-Romagna), who served as president for the previous four years, Arianna Giannoni (Tuscany), Giovanni Pietro Rampini (Umbria), and Maria Teresa Maroso (Veneto), all members of the board. Colì has served as provincial president of the "Artistic, Traditional, and Quality Crafts" category of Confartigianato Imprese Lecce since 2009, and has also served as regional president of the Ceramics category since 2012. He is a member of the board of directors of the guarantee cooperative "L'Artigiana" and was provincial president of the ceramics consortium. "In order to further increase association activities for the benefit of the industry," Colì states, "it is necessary to constantly monitor the economic situation of the ceramics sector in Italy, implementing and strengthening existing research efforts, including through the support of Italian universities and other relevant organizations. "Establishing and strengthening relationships with foreign partners is essential to the industry's development," he adds, "through various institutional initiatives, both cultural (for example, organizing themed conferences) and commercial (for example, workshops and trade shows)." Cutrofiano Mayor Oriele Rolli and City Councilor for Productive Activities Tommaso Campa express their deep satisfaction. "One of our fellow citizens," Rolli and Campa say, "has been elected to lead such an important and vital industry for our manufacturing base. His appointment is a prestigious recognition of the passion he has demonstrated over many years of activity. We hope," they conclude, "that he continues his career with the same enthusiasm and commitment."

F. A.Q.

Some of the questions you ask about the world of ceramics are probably common among others. We've selected the most frequently asked questions we receive: in this section, we've provided the answers we've provided.

  • WHY DO SOME PRODUCTS, APPARENTLY WITH THE SAME DECORATION, HAVE DIFFERENT PRICES?

There are various reasons for this. An object can be made either on a lathe, or by hand, or by a press; it's obvious that a handcrafted product must cost more than one made mechanically. The same applies to decoration; there are two main types: brush decoration and decal decoration. Decal decoration doesn't require great artistic skill, as it involves a film applied using specific techniques. However, manual decoration on ceramics is very complex, even compared to other techniques. That said, another fundamental variable must be introduced: the "sincerity" of the manufacturer, who may be able to sell a pressed object for a handmade one.

  • HOW CAN YOU DISTINGUISH A DECAL FROM A HANDMADE DECORATION?

Distinguishing a decal from a hand-decorated piece is very simple. Using a magnifying glass, simply observe the shading of the decoration itself. On a decal-decorated piece, you'll see the screen of the frame, while on a hand-decorated piece, you'll see the linear shading. Sometimes this check can be done without a magnifying glass when the decoration is simple enough to observe.

  • HOW CAN YOU DISTINGUISH A PRODUCT MADE ON A LATHE FROM ONE MADE WITH A PRESS?

Distinguishing a lathe-turned product from a handmade one is no easy task. You'll certainly notice some internal striations caused by the craftsman's fingerprints on an object, while the surface of a machine-made item is perfectly smooth. Unfortunately, special molds have been created that give the same "handmade" result. An almost foolproof method is this: if you place several handmade objects of the same model side by side, they should differ, even slightly, in key measurements (height, diameter, etc.).

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TERRACOTTA AND MAIOLICA?

It's easy to confuse the meanings of ceramic, terracotta, and majolica! First of all, ceramic refers to any manufactured item.

  • WHY DO YOU CLAIM THAT YOU HAVE BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY SINCE 1650?

According to the land registers of the Province of Lecce, in 1650 a certain Andrea Colì owned a workshop where he worked in terracotta. In this regard, we offer the Colì genealogy (research carried out by Dr. Vincenzo Ligori and published in the book "Cutrofiano, l'argilla, la terra, la pietra", Ed. Congedo): Andrea (1650), Oronzio Giuseppe (1683), Paolino (1736), Antonio (1769), Pasquale (1808), Gaetano (1844), Angelo Pasquale (1874), Antonio (1917), the brothers Donato and Rocco, with their sons Antonio, Donato, Massimo, Giuseppe, and Giovanni are the owners of the Colì Group (FRATELLI COLI' Snc and FRATELLI COLI' Srl).

  • WHY DOES CERAMIC FIREPLACE OFTEN CRACK EVEN ON THE FIRST USE?

When using ceramic baking dishes, a few precautions are essential to ensure they last over time and to reap all their benefits in terms of flavor and authenticity. First, and only for the first time, soak the dish in warm water for 12 hours. Afterwards, simply avoid thermal shock, such as placing the hot ceramic on a wet surface or under cold water. After washing, let it dry upside down before storing it in the pantry. It should be noted that cracking in the glaze is normal and does not affect its use. All Colì baking dishes come with a label indicating the various usage instructions and some practical tips.

  • WHAT IS IMPRUNETA TERRACOTTA?

The name Impruneta derives from the area where the clay is mined, located in Tuscany, and whose key property is its high resistance. This material is renowned worldwide and recognized as the finest quality clay available; it's no coincidence that objects made with Impruneta clay are also expensive, but they're money well spent for those who demand the best from terracotta. Impruneta terracotta is also protected by a consortium that mandates its use only in the Impruneta area. Anyone who purchases an Impruneta product knows they're purchasing a high-quality product made exclusively in a specific area of Tuscany.

  • HOW DO YOU REMOVE WHITE BRACKISH FROM TERRACOTTA POTS?

This happens when the mineral salts in the soil inside the pot are naturally filtered through the walls and, once released, dry out upon contact with the air. However, you can easily restore the pot to its original appearance by washing it with a solution of water and 10% hydrochloric muriatic acid (available at any hardware store) and rinsing it thoroughly.

  • WHAT ABOUT THOSE GREEN SPOTS?

Those "green spots" are moss that grows mostly on pots whose sides are never exposed to the sun. It's easy to imagine that the plant isn't harmed; in fact, some people like them because they give the whole thing a worn, antique look. If you want to remove them, simply wash the pot thoroughly with water and bleach, without removing the plant.

  • WHY IS THE MARKET FOR PLASTIC VASES GROWING OVER TERRACOTTA? ARE THEY BETTER?

Recently, we've witnessed a veritable revolution in the world of green thumbs. The demand for plant pots is shifting from terracotta to plastic. There are several reasons for this: - they're lightweight and easy to transport and use, even for less physically fit individuals; - they're significantly lower in cost than other terracotta containers; - given their light weight, they can also be used on terraces without compromising the structure of the home. However, beware of the disadvantages: - plants categorically reject plastic pots as their natural habitat; how would you feel if you wore a plastic shirt? (Imagine that in both summer and winter); - the image you get from a terracotta pot is unthinkable when using a plastic one. Even though resin pots are available on the market that are almost identical to terracotta ones, don't forget one key variable: the price, which is almost the same as that of terracotta pots! Therefore, you need to be extremely careful when purchasing pots; everything becomes much easier if you empathize with your beloved plant!

  • WHY THE ROOSTER LOGO?

The rooster logo was chosen from among many options, all tied to the symbolism of Salento ceramics, the region where the company is based. The aim was to ensure the brand's origins were clearly identified, a land rich in art, culture, history, and, above all, a strong desire to succeed.

  • WHAT IS HIGH-RESISTANCE MAJOLICA?

In 2002, the company made a fundamental leap in quality, changing its raw materials and manufacturing processes. It did so with a firm focus on marketing, responding to consumer expectations, who today demand something more from majolica—more durability (about double)—without sacrificing the aesthetics of traditional craftsmanship. Thus, "MAR - MAIOLICA ALTA RESISTENZA" was born, with a brand alongside the factory logo to demonstrate the use of the new raw material in the product lines in which it is present. Despite being a revolutionary and disruptive innovation, this exceptional innovation is represented with traditional sobriety and discretion. MAR is distinguished by its round logo with the discus thrower in the center and the words MAIOLICA ALTA RESISTENZA around the edge—beware of any imitations.

  • HOW CAN YOU DISTINGUISH A FRATELLI COLI' PRODUCT?

Every Coli' product features the ROOSTER symbol on a circular background. This varies depending on the product: - positioned on the outer base of tableware; - stamped on both garden items and baking dishes. Great care must be taken: SOME COMPANIES IMITATE THE "COLI' Maioliche e Terracotte dal 1650" BRAND (registered) THROUGH SOME "RETOUCHINGS," such as a "pseudo-rooster" on other backgrounds, etc. This pleases us in a certain sense: when something is popular, it is imitated, and... the more popular it is, the more it is imitated. It is important that those who purchase a counterfeit product are aware of the lower quality and the many other small details that differentiate an original product from others.
