In its ceramic production, Fratelli Colì uses a process to correct the porosity and color of the body by applying a casing, which can vary in thickness and be either transparent or opaque. This casing plays a crucial role, reducing the permeability of softer bodies while imparting remarkable smoothness to harder bodies. Among the glazes used, bright white is the classic majolica coating, lending an elegant and luminous appearance. Furthermore, the coatings can be dyed with vitrifiable colors composed of metal oxides. These, depending on the temperature and the kiln atmosphere—which can be oxidizing or reducing—perform differently, resulting in varied and fascinating effects. The colours used in this process can be divided into two categories: those fired at low heat or muffle heat, to be applied exclusively on the coatings at temperatures of around 600°, and those fired at high heat, to be used under and inside the coatings at temperatures ranging from 900° to 970° and above, allowing for a truly wide and diversified range of artistic results.
